getting to know Cynthia through Terry's birthday celebrations

I was lucky enough to be invited to accompany Terry (young Stair) on her birthday trip when we were turning 9 or 10- I had recently moved to the lake with my family and this was my first up close introduction to Cynthia and Terry together- and what a wonderful introduction to Cynthia's expansive sense of fun that was! We took an overnight train to the Homestead which meant that we had to go see a very late movie in DC, Jerry Lewis, in order to stay up late enough to get on the train. Then we had our own sleeping cabin and once it arrived, maybe 4 hours later, the train car was parked on a side track in order to let us sleep until morning- All this fun and we had not even arrived at the Homestead yet! There Cynthia allowed us to play and frolic around the large property at will and included us in many activities, most memorably, the mud spa baths which were highlighted by the Scotch Shower, which involved being hosed down by some large women with a very large fire hoses at full tilt.... Now that was something really different!Especially back then... Cynthia was always several steps ahead of everyone, but she was not showing off, she was generously inviting us to join her. It did not take long to realise that life could never be dull with Cynthia and as I watched, she inspired her daughter, Terry with a similar thirst for Life and Fun- and the generous wish to share it all. It was probably the next year, when Terry had a group of friends to a seated birthday lunch(again not at all the norm for elementary schoolkids)enthusiastically hosted by Cynthia in the lake house and I will never know whose idea it was, Cynthia's or Terry's, but the main course was snails in garlic a la francaise and Terry was thrilled to surprise, delight and even shock her classmates! So Cynthia was always bigger and more fun than anyone around- she may have lived on the lake but there was never even a touch of suburban in this woman- she was always ready to go, to travel, to party, to adventure, to laugh! She loved life and was always interested in exploring more of it. And that is how she raised her children, giving them that same enthusiasm for living. Her legacy continues with the children and grandchildren she inspired.
